Terror is lurking at the Flesh Farm as the Ruby Falls Haunted Cavern prepares for a monster outbreak now through October 30, Fridays through Sundays with additional openings on October 13, 20 and Halloween. The area’s top haunt opens nightly at dark with the Freak Parade beginning at 7:30 p.m. Every year brings a new theme, new characters and new fear factors, with returning favorites like the Hellevator, chainsaws and fire-breathing. Haunted Cavern is an experience unlike any other that takes place 26 stories underground in a cave (with one way out), as well as an above-ground haunt that is equally horrific. This year's Flesh Farm is a world torn by infection and chaos, where the Matron Mojo has formed her own brutal society that feeds on the madness. Her “revenants” hunt the living - zombies to be farmed - to satisfy her sinister urges. Scud Row Outpost was formed from the ashes of what many called Ruby Falls and now thrives on the blood of the weak, ruled by Matron’s “wretchers.” The Ruby Falls Haunted Cavern is in its 13th year of fear and has continued to terrify record-breaking crowds annually. It is currently a Top 20 Event by Southeast Tourism Society and was awarded the Ongoing Special Event Award in 2015 by Tennessee Hospitality & Tourism Association. In 2014 it was listed as number four on Buzzfeed’s national list of “19 Terrifying Haunted Houses You Should Experience Before You Die.” It has also been awarded the sixth spot on the national haunt list by Rand McNally. Prices vary nightly, with discounts offered online at www.hauntedcavern.com. Warning to all visitors: Expect to be scared upon exiting your vehicle. You will descend into a cave. Where no one can hear you scream. Beware of what lurks in the dark. May cause nightmares. Mark your calendar now for the heartwarming story of "A Christmas Carol," an original ballet by Barry VanCura. Mr. VanCura’s ballet was first staged in 1997 and is one of few ballet adaptations of “A Christmas Carol.” In 2005, the work was filmed by WTCI and aired both locally and nationally during the holiday season. This year Executive/Artistic Director Anna Baker- VanCura brings the ballet to stage again for the Chattanooga audience. "A Christmas Carol" will feature Board Treasurer Andrew Bewley of Chickasaw Capital Management as Ebenezer Scrooge. Guest artist Jere Hunt, company dancer with Rioult New York City, will perform Bob Cratchit. Ballet Tennessee professional dancer Hannah Locke is leading dancer as Gwendoline Cratchit. Miss Locke performed with the corps de ballet in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 performances when the ballet was previously staged. Julia Sanford performs the role of Belle, formerly danced by Anna Baker-VanCura. Mrs. Sanford also performed various roles in each of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 productions. Ballet Tennessee faculty member and community artist Lindsay Pierce joins the cast as Jacob Marley. Leading roles for the Ghosts of Christmas are performed by Ballet Tennessee company dancers Annabel Long asChristmas Past (Baylor School), LaJeromeny Brown, (CCA), Chyna Clark (CCA) and Keely Hein (Notre Dame High School) as Christmas Present, Lydia Barnett (Ivy Academy) and Lindsay Pierce as Christmas Future. Through carols, vocal and instrumental, Charles Dickens’ classic tale comes to life. Mr. VanCura chose Franz Shubert’s music to connect scenes and guide the atmospheric changes through the exuberant London scenes where shopkeepers and families ready for the holiday. Carols gently sung take the audience back in time to visit a younger Scrooge still in school. Between Christmas Past and Present, “Humbugs” disturb Ebenezer Scrooge from his sleep, taking over his precious bedroom. As his journey continues with sorrows of poverty, sickness and death, all possible both in the present and future, the music and dance guide us through his journey. Ebenezer Scrooge and the audience arrive at the conclusion of the story stronger, more vibrant and filled with the joy of giving. Join Ballet Tennessee this December for a brilliant family holiday experience. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, December 1. Call the UTC Fine Arts Center at (423) 425-4269. And, make plans now to attend Rock Creek’s New Year’s Eve Communion Service, which is December 31 at 6 p.m. The Church of the Good Shepherd is having its final Advent Taize service on Wednesday, December 16 at 6 p.m. This meditative worship includes elements of silence, repetition and prayer. And don’t forget, LMPC’s Christmas Eve services are planned for 3, 5 and 6:30 p.m. Lookout Mountain United Methodist Church is having a special Lessons and Carols service on Sunday, December 20 at 11 a.m. This will be fun for the whole family. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is hosting a Christmas Open House at the Cravens House on Lookout Mountain. To make a reservation, and for more information about this event, please contact the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at (423) 821-7786. In 1863, the Cravens family spent Christmas away from their home on Lookout Mountain. In fact, only a skeleton of their once vibrant dwelling stood at Christmas. Union soldiers and war correspondents camping on Lookout Mountain stripped the home of its wood for tent flooring, firewood, and souvenirs. Learn about some of the experiences Union and Confederate soldiers and their families experienced after the Battles for Chattanooga during your visit to Cravens House. For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chch. With the holidays upon us, several Lookout Mountain, Tenn., stores will host open houses the first weekend of December.
The Market on the Mountain invites everyone to drop by on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, and sample yummy products from some outstanding vendors. There will be several new lines featured, including wonderful jams and jellies and several flavors of sticky puddings, including toffee, chocolate, and lemon. The Market will also offer tastes of ham biscuits and mint brownies, perfect for your holiday entertaining, as well as a new line of cheesecakes from the Tennessee Cheesecake Company. There are too many gourmet hard-to-find goodies to list here, so you just need to stop in and see. And sample! Of course, the deli will be cooking Christmas dinner and you can pre-order casseroles, as well as individual plates. And don’t forget, they make gift baskets, which are great hostess presents. The Mountain Escape Spa will offer free mini-services on December 3 from 4-8 p.m., as well as 10 percent off and hors d’oeuvres. From noon to 5 p.m. on December 4 and 5, enjoy 10 percent off retail prices, door prizes and hors d’oeuvres. There will also be a trunk showing of jewelry, featuring Hazel Smyth, and Audrey Michelle (a.k.a. Michelle Russell.) The store has many candles, including the ever-popular Frasier fir, as well as red currant and gingerbread scents. Clothing items include Softies socks and cozy hooded sweaters, as well as pajamas and tunics that would be perfect under the tree. Those wonderful gift certificates make a perfect present! Stop by Yessick’s on Saturday, December 5, for storewide discounts. The store is full of gifts, including leggings, jackets, scarves, hats and purses, plus many Christmas food items like jams, holiday coffees, soup mixes, cake and pie mixes, plus Oprah’s favorite toffee. There are flasks, baby items, purses, Arthur Court pewter, lots of jewelry, stemless monogrammed wine glasses, Mud-Pie outfits, Christmas potpourri, napkins, aprons, and plates, adorable burlap shopping bags, dog treats, and amusing cocktail napkins. Stocking stuffers are in abundance at Yessicks and many are priced well below $5! I hope you didn’t miss Fairyland Pharmacy’s open house on November 28, when the store was offering 20 percent off everything. It is always a very festive affair and a perfect kickoff for the season. Alan Voges Jr. gave out 85 (the age of his late father) $2 bills, so the legacy of Alan Voges Sr. continues. This pharmacy always amazes me with what it carries. There are animated plush animals, Russell Stover’s candies, gourmet nuts, hardware, clever cocktail napkins, Christmas plates, cards, invitations and napkins, Melissa and Doug wooden toys, phone chargers, adorable animal boot toppers … You have to come browse to see it all. Our mountain may be small, but we have a lot to offer. Besides the merchandise, gift certificates from any of the stores or restaurants are always a treat for everyone. You can have your malls or be disappointed with online purchases, but me, I’d rather shop on the top and support our local businesses, and save myself a lot of stress and time. Happy shopping! by Gwin Tugman |
