“The gray bat skims the cave floor, missing the man’s forehead by millimeters.” That is the introduction of Ruby Falls by Gin Phillips. I am immediately in that cave and actually flinched at the very idea of the whirl of a bat’s wings at my head in the dark underground.
In other words, I’m hooked at one sentence.
The opening line is “He’s likely dead, although the children have no idea.” What? Who? Why? When? All of those questions are pertinent, and I need to know the answer. To think I could have them answered in that actual setting would be remarkable.
I actually can, and so can you.
Bestselling author Gin Phillips is bringing her newest historical fiction novel, “Ruby Falls,” right to Lookout Mountain. Inspired by the real-life 1928 discovery of the caverns, the story takes place deep underground at the start of the Great Depression. It follows Ada Smith, a woman exploring the hidden mountain passages, who gets caught in the middle of a cave murder mystery where the killer is trapped in the dark right along with the group.
The book is already getting huge reviews:
It’s been named a top spring read by The New York Times, CrimeReads, and Book Riot, and was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition. Phillips, who also wrote “Fierce Kingdom,” lives in Birmingham, Alabama.
Upcoming Book Signing:
Skyline Loft at Ruby Falls, Atlantic Crime Publishing, and local bookstore The Book & Cover are hosting an author talk and signing.
