Sally Nelson is the brainchild behind Lookout Bookout, and folks love this event for all sorts of reasons! Yes, it is the perfect opportunity to clean out those old children’s books and novels you finished months ago. And cookbooks you no longer use or financial books or sports biographies or nonfiction titles or even encyclopedias! Perhaps you are looking for new children’s books or the latest novel or a new set of encyclopedias. Well, you know exactly what to do now!
This event is a community donate/share book event; you can donate books as well as take some new tomes home for free. Any leftover books are either given away to a charity or added to one of the many the Little Free Libraries on the mountain.
As Sally says, “The Little Free Library was built with the intention of [enabling] community members to pick up or drop off a book of any genre for all ages any day or time. I kept many books from the last Lookout Bookout to stock the shelves for the community book share. I ask that our neighborhood friends continue the book rotation within our community. Spread the word through Facebook, Lookout Mountain City Hall, or reach out to me when you see specific genres or children’s books lacking, and I will stock them until my collection is empty. Until then, when you finish a book, please put it back or replace it with a book from your home collection. And please keep sharing your love of books through our Little Free Library! If anyone is interested in building one for your neighborhood, please contact me and you can use our existing design.
Lookout Bookout is set for September 12 at the Lookout Mountain, Ga., City Hall. On that day, you will find plenty of little “reading corners” around, the perfect spot to throw out a blanket and stretch out with a stack of books. It’s also the perfect time to catch up with neighbors and meet new friends.
You can drop off your used books of all kinds, as well as puzzles, yotos and tonies at Fairyland Elementary School, Lookout Mountain Elementary School, The Hive or Lookout Mountain, Ga., City Hall from September 7-11 during normal business hours. (Please don’t drop off during car pool hours at the schools, thought.)
Sally’s simple idea of a way to both clean out and stock up on books has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm. It is such a great way to share your books and get to read new ones. Lookout Bookout is like a huge Little Free Library, which are all over our mountain, but the event is only for one day. The next Lookout Bookout will be after spring break so hold on to your book collection until then, please!
