King of the Mountain Race is May 12

PictureRegister now for the King of the Mountain race on Saturday, May 12.
Mark your calendar for May 12, the day of the much-anticipated King of the Mountain Road Race. Bring your family and friends to the Commons on Lookout Mountain for a fun-filled spring morning. Good Shepherd School, with the help and support of an army of volunteers and sponsors, will host a 4-mile run and a 1-mile fun run to benefit the Good Shepherd School Fund, which provides tuition scholarships for families in need.

This is an annual event for Lookout Mountain and surrounding communities. The 4-mile run is a competitive event on a mostly flat and downhill trek with rolling hills. It’s a very scenic course, running along the east and west brows of Lookout Mountain, through Point Park and by Sunset Rock. The 1-mile course is flat and downhill and can be easily traversed by strollers, as well.

The top male and female finishers overall, as well as the masters (age 40 and over) and the top three males and females in each of seven age groups, will receive awards. In addition, all youth participants will be awarded ribbons. All pre-registered participants will receive race T-shirts with the unique King of the Mountain logo designed by the Andrew Thompson Company. A random drawing will be held to award door prizes, as well.

The race takes place at the Commons. Look for the basketball court, banners, balloons and lots of friends and fun! Many thanks to Mountain View Ford, Fletcher Bright Realty, Ruby Falls, Kelly Subaru, Coca-Cola, First Tennessee Bank, Yates Bleachery, Lookout Mountain Primary Care, Starr Mathews, Creeks Bend Golf Course, Raymond James, Brock Insurance and Special Friends of Good Shepherd for their contributions towards making this race a success.

Thanks also to James Williams, who has given his time and talents from the first race to this, the 13th, as the King of the Mountain race director. This year, Jeffery Wiess is working with James to take over after James picks up the bullhorn for the last time to start off the runners. James has been an invaluable team member, as we have raised over $200,000 under his direction to provide tuition assistance to students who otherwise could not attend Good Shepherd School. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to James Williams for all he has done to make this event a grand success!

The 4-mile race begins at 8 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run begins at 9 a.m. Late registration and packet pick-ups will begin at 6:45 a.m. For more information or a registration form, contact Melanie Carpenter at Good Shepherd School at (423) 821-0044. You can register online at chattanoogatrackclub.org or go to the Active website to register.

Entry fees for the 4-mile race before May 5 are $30, after May 5, $35. The 1-mile fun run fees are $20 for early registration and $25 after May 5.

Help us continue this great tradition and help families in need at the same time. You may be crowned the King of the Mountain!

PictureFairyland Festival is May 1, 2018.
Rainy weather has postponed the much beloved Fairyland Festival to Tuesday, May 1. The forecast calls for sunny skies, snow cones, confetti eggs and pure mayhem.

That’s right, folks, the soggy spring we have had cannot put a damper on the much beloved Fairyland Festival. Now in its 62nd year, the festival promises to bring back all your favorites plus a few new booths sure to delight the whole family. Laser tag, inflatables and pony rides are back, as are Mr. T’s pizza, Clumpies ice creme and Krispy Kremes. New this year is the farmer’s market booth and Two Sons food truck. So don’t worry if you didn’t have time to make it to the grocery store or prepare dinner, the Fairyland Festival has you covered.

Kristin Tremain, Festival Chair recently told us about some new exciting shakeups to the old lineup. The swine is gone, but the slime is on. Fairyland faculty members will not be subjected to “kiss the pig”, however students can vote on which faculty member they would like to be slimed. The “sliming” will take place at 6:30 p.m. The festival begins at 3 p.m. on May 1, with the presentation of the king and queen and end of the event at 7 p.m. Bring the whole family for food, fun and fancy, while supporting Fairyland School.
