PictureCampers line up to purchase slushies during Commons Camp.
Lots of young Mountaineers enjoyed Commons Camp during June, and July promises to be even better, with plans for the much-anticipated water day, as well as a bouncy house, a treasure hunt, a tractor ride and other fun activities. Children who are participating this year are having a great time. The outstanding counselors have not let the heat slow them down one bit. They are constantly leading activities with the children, including chum ball, corn hole tournaments, dodge ball and crafts.

Commons Camp is a drop-in camp, with no pre-registration necessary.  You can come for one day, a week, or for the rest of the summer! Campers look forward to pizza and snow cones on Tuesday and Thursdays, which are both high points. Regular trips to the Mountain Market are also a big treat.

Summer is not over! Commons Camp is open to kids ages 4 and up through July 20. The 4-6-year-olds meet from 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a cost of $10 per day. Older campers meet every weekday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at a cost $15 a day or $50 a week. Contact Scott Shell at (423) 619-4944 if you have any questions.

Baseball, Softball Seasons Begin With Parade

PictureFletcher Wakefield and Niko Faulk
The annual opening day baseball parade on Lookout Mountain was bigger than usual, thanks to more players joining the league and a new age bracket for 4-year-olds. This young division will participate in a baseball clinic.

The weather cooperated for the affair, and the rain held off till late afternoon. As usual, the parade participants congregated at Fairyland School and proceeded down Lula Lake Road to the Commons, delighting cheering bystanders. Fire trucks from both Lookout Mountain, Ga./Tenn., blasted sirens as they led a motley crew of vehicles that included trucks, cars, golf carts and even a unicycle.

This year, there are 21 teams and over 200 children participating, and nearly all of them were in attendance for the parade! Arriving at the Commons, the excited crowd gathered at the newly-named Dockery Field. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a short prayer, Nelson Williams, president of the recreation board, introduced the teams, coaches and sponsors. He thanked everyone for coming, especially noting those people who are instrumental in making this baseball program possible and successful.

Coach Scott Shell, director of the recreation program, also thanked the community for participating in this wonderful event before proclaiming the long-awaited-for words of, “Play ball!”

King of the Mountain Race is May 12

4/30/2018

PictureRegister now for the King of the Mountain race on Saturday, May 12.
Mark your calendar for May 12, the day of the much-anticipated King of the Mountain Road Race. Bring your family and friends to the Commons on Lookout Mountain for a fun-filled spring morning. Good Shepherd School, with the help and support of an army of volunteers and sponsors, will host a 4-mile run and a 1-mile fun run to benefit the Good Shepherd School Fund, which provides tuition scholarships for families in need.

This is an annual event for Lookout Mountain and surrounding communities. The 4-mile run is a competitive event on a mostly flat and downhill trek with rolling hills. It’s a very scenic course, running along the east and west brows of Lookout Mountain, through Point Park and by Sunset Rock. The 1-mile course is flat and downhill and can be easily traversed by strollers, as well.

The top male and female finishers overall, as well as the masters (age 40 and over) and the top three males and females in each of seven age groups, will receive awards. In addition, all youth participants will be awarded ribbons. All pre-registered participants will receive race T-shirts with the unique King of the Mountain logo designed by the Andrew Thompson Company. A random drawing will be held to award door prizes, as well.

The race takes place at the Commons. Look for the basketball court, banners, balloons and lots of friends and fun! Many thanks to Mountain View Ford, Fletcher Bright Realty, Ruby Falls, Kelly Subaru, Coca-Cola, First Tennessee Bank, Yates Bleachery, Lookout Mountain Primary Care, Starr Mathews, Creeks Bend Golf Course, Raymond James, Brock Insurance and Special Friends of Good Shepherd for their contributions towards making this race a success.

Thanks also to James Williams, who has given his time and talents from the first race to this, the 13th, as the King of the Mountain race director. This year, Jeffery Wiess is working with James to take over after James picks up the bullhorn for the last time to start off the runners. James has been an invaluable team member, as we have raised over $200,000 under his direction to provide tuition assistance to students who otherwise could not attend Good Shepherd School. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to James Williams for all he has done to make this event a grand success!

The 4-mile race begins at 8 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run begins at 9 a.m. Late registration and packet pick-ups will begin at 6:45 a.m. For more information or a registration form, contact Melanie Carpenter at Good Shepherd School at (423) 821-0044. You can register online at chattanoogatrackclub.org or go to the Active website to register.

Entry fees for the 4-mile race before May 5 are $30, after May 5, $35. The 1-mile fun run fees are $20 for early registration and $25 after May 5.

Help us continue this great tradition and help families in need at the same time. You may be crowned the King of the Mountain!

Yoga Festival Benefits Organ Transplant Group

8/24/2016

Picture
Southern Bend, a new nonprofit organization started by Heather Dendy and Kari Pollard, will kick off the first yoga festival in Chattanooga. Open hearted individuals are invited to join hundreds of their soon to be closest friends in a powerful practice of unity and breath on Saturday, August 27, from noon to 11 p.m. at Coolidge Park.

With the help of SBYF board members, these ladies worked hard and furiously to get Southern Bend Yoga Festival up and running, and have partnered with local retailers, food and beverage vendors, live music, national talent and native artists. Southern Bend is a family-oriented all day festival that will feature slack lining, meditation, paddle boarding, acroyoga, kids yoga and so much more. If tai chi, sunset paddle boarding, or flow classes are not your thing, then pull up a mat and take a savasana (quiet prone pose) instead!

Southern Bend aims to unite the community in joyful celebration. Igniting passions for positive change, mindful living and a belief that great things are possible when people knit together, on and off the mat, is the idea for this event. Perhaps a bend in perspective can accumulate and build into a movement large enough to change the world we live in or change the life of one precious child.

At the festival these gals hope to introduce many of us to yoga who have been curious about it and all it has to offer. The proceeds from the festival will support the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, which is dear to founder Heather’s heart since her son, Benjamin, is on the liver transplant list. To help, donate, or participate will be an acknowledgement of the web of life that connects each single spirit to a great community cause. So “Be the Bend!” Go www.southernbendfestival.com or contact Aloyse Brown at aloyseblair@gmail.com for more information.
