Catch "Chitty" Before it's Gone

PictureSee "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" this weekend.
Make the drive to Signal Mountain this week for the Signal Mountain Playhouse's last few showings of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," which Mirror staff called "delightful, fun, and worth seeing again and again!" Your last chances to see the production are July 29 and 30 at 8 p.m.

Show director Allan Leford and choreographer David Wood are very excited about the cast, as is the Playhouse board, orchestra conductor Sandy Morris and accompanist Michael Huseman.

Tim Forsythe will play Caractacus Potts; Shandra Burnett will play Truly Scrumptious; Paul Hendricks will play Grandpa Potts; Colette Smith will play Jemima Potts; Zachery Huseman will play Jeremy Potts; Lee Abelson will play Lord Scrumptious; Bob Roza will play the Child Catcher; and Kristin Sharp will play the Vulgarian Diva. These are all seasoned veterans of the Playhouse and other local stages. Also, there is a world of other talented friends and neighbors who will play the other parts in this character-rich musical, which was adapted from the story by Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond.

The show will take place at the Playhouse Amphitheater on the corner of Rolling Way and James Boulevard. The box office opens at 6 p.m. for those who wish to place lawn chairs early. Tickets are sold on evenings of performances only (no advanced sales) and are $5 for children and $15 for adults. Please bring cash or checks only.

Parking is not permitted on Rolling Way because this street is used by emergency vehicles when going out on calls. However, patrons with handicaps may remove the orange cones on Rolling Way and drive into the Playhouse grounds for parking. Please replace the orange cones after you drive through.

Concessions are for sale on site, and there will be portable toilets available as well.
For more information, go to the Playhouse website, the Signal Mountain Playhouse Facebook page, or call Anne Rittenberry at (423) 886-5243.

Carpetbaggers Wanted!

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a series of special, 30 minute programs on Saturday, July 16, and on Sunday, July 17, at Cravens House, a structure dating to the Reconstruction Period, on Lookout Mountain. These programs will explore how white Chattanoogans, freedmen and Northern emigrants rebuilt the scenic city during Reconstruction. There are no admission fees for the programs at Cravens House.

In 1868, Chattanoogans ran a newspaper advertisement: "WANTED IMMEDIATELY ANY NUMBER OF CARPET-BAGGERS TO COME TO CHATTANOOGA AND SETTLE." At the end of the Civil War, people throughout the south struggled to rebuild their lives and their communities. Chattanooga's leaders turned to a surprising place for growth – Northern "carpetbaggers." The influx of northerners, like former Union General John Wilder, primed the economic engine of the city and thousands of Freedmen and white southerners found work in the growing urban economy.

The weekend program schedule for Saturday and Sunday is as follows:
10 a.m.: “A New City: Union Veterans and the Rebuilding of Chattanooga”
Explore the role that Union veterans, including the United States Colored Troops, played in rebuilding Chattanooga after the Civil War.
2 p.m.:  “An Unending War: Racial and Political Violence around Chattanooga During Reconstruction.” Violence around the country continued long after the armies surrendered. This program will examine the history and legacy of this violence and tension and Chattanooga.
3 p.m.: “Robert Cravens: Rebuilding a Home and an Industry”
Robert Cravens rebuilt his home on Lookout Mountain in the year following the Civil War. Learn how the Cravens family met the challenges of Reconstruction as you tour their rebuilt home.
For more information about programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, contact the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at (706) 866-9241, the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at (423) 821-7786, or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chch

First Things First's Movies in the Park returns to Coolidge Park this month. Each Saturday in July, beginning July 9, a family-friendly box office hit movie will be projected on a giant movie screen in the park.

First Things First is an award-winning, nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening families in Hamilton County through education, collaboration and mobilization. First Things First encourages families to pack up chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and gather for some quality time while watching this year’s featured movies.

"First Things First's mission is to strengthen the families of our communities," said Julie Baumgardner of First Things First. "Movies in the Park is a great opportunity for families to spend time together and create memories that will last a lifetime."

Can you guess the titles of the movies First Things First is showing this summer? Here are some hints:
  • July 9 – Funny little yellow creatures are recruited by a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband, hatch a plot to take over the world.
  • July 16 – A police officer rabbit and wily fox set out to solve a mysterious case in a bustling animal metropolis.
  • July 23 – The galaxy faces a new threat from the dark side, but a young duo joins forces to defeat evil and restore order in the universe.
  • July 30 – A hockey-loving 11-year-old girl’s world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Her emotions try to guide her through this life-changing event.

"Movies in the Park is one of our favorite events," Baumgardner said. "We encourage families to join us and enjoy some quality time together."

All movies are free to the public. Movies will start each week at sundown (just after 9 p.m.). Concessions will be available for purchase on-site. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Movies in the Park is sponsored by Comcast, Sunny 92.3, Hamico, Coker Tire, Belhaven University, The Chattanooga Times Free Press, City of Chattanooga, Family Concessions LLC and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.
