Girls Preparatory School and the McCallie School students from Lookout, Signal and Riverview are among the cast for “Into the Woods,” the Tony Award-winning musical to be presented on April 15-17 on the GPS Frierson Theatre stage. The musical was awarded Best Score, Best Book and Best Actress in a Musical. Music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim and the book is by James Lapine.

Participants include Charlotte Smith, Cameron Ford, Clare Hamn, Kent Glass, Will Parker, Leah Baxter, Mary Jane Clower, Mary Owen, Catherine Cobb, Emmie Cobb, Stella Pritchard, Ben Kent, Bennett Burns, Carmen Resnick, Andrew Cook and Jack Curtis.

Characters from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” “Cinderella” and other fairy tales are interwoven in a story that tells of a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family. True to form, this fairy tale involves a witch’s curse and moral lessons as the main characters interact with the others and face consequences along their journey. GPS is collaborating with Brenda Schwab, resident costume designer at Chattanooga State, for the extensive costuming needed.

Directing the musical is new GPS Theatre Director Erin Schmidt, a master acting teacher and former teaching artist and stage director. She received her MFA in acting from the Actors Studio Drama School in NYC, where she received the prestigious Shubert Scholarship for Excellence. She is a member of the Actors Equity Association. Mike Lees is the musical director.

Friday and Saturday evening’s productions are at 7 p.m.; Sunday’s matinee begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now; tickets are $8 and $12 for mezzanine and orchestra seating. Call (423) 634-3479 or email eschmidt@gps.edu.
